Our Robots, Ourselves: Robotics and the Myths of Autonomy

For autonomous vehicles, levels of automa-tion for on-road vehicles (1) are defined, yet no such definitions exist for medical robots. To stimulate discussions, we propose six levels of autonomy for medical robotics as one possible framework (Fig. 1): Level0:Noautonomy.Thislevelincludes Autonomy in robotics means computation autonomy but many people think autonomy means political autonomy. Computational autonomy refers to the capability to independently perform a task, whether the task is performed without any supervision, is permitted any initiative to modify the constraints on how to perform the task, or is permitted to modify the task (also called levels of initiative). The future of U.S. robotics will depend on key societal drivers such as manufacturing, logistics and e-commerce, transportation, quality of life, clinical healthcare, food supply, and security and rescue.
